7 Classic Pieces Everyone Should Invest In

I’m digging 2017 (minus a few obvious issues) but the speed in which trends are changing is giving me vertigo. The world of fashion has always been constantly changing but at a time when Instagram is so relevant things seem to be moving even faster.

But all truly great outfits tend to have classic elements because classic is classic. And because they look great on everyone and they have a simple beauty to them. They are versatile and easy to wear.

Don’t get me wrong trends are amazing but if you look to the most stylish people you know I can almost guarantee they have these 7 classic pieces in their wardrobe.

White Button Down

The white button has been a staple in every classic woman’s wardrobe since the 1950s when iconic women like Katherine Hepburn and Marlyn Monroe adorned this simple crisp beauty. And to this day women influencing the fashion world like Rosie Huntington-Whitley, Victoria Beckham, and Olivia Palermo all still rock this staple with a new look but the same feel.

This top will look great year round with shorts (like these or these) skirts (like this or this) jeans (like these or these) or dressed up (with thisΒ or this).

This is a piece that you should spend a little more money on because the fabric, fit, and longevity will increase greatly if you shell out a little more cash.

You can wear it anywhere, anytime, and make it appropriate for any situation. It will quickly become one of your favorite pieces and you will be glad you bought a top the can stand up to being worn and cleaned over and over.

Blue Jeans

We are living in a world of endless styles of jeans and I am so happy about it. I love jeans, they are classic, versatile, and easy to care for. There are so many different styles like embroidered, black, and distressed jeans. But the one that has been talked about the least is the one we all need.

A pair of good blue jeans may be the most important piece in your closet. Who doesn’t love the way they look in a pair of well-fitting jeans. And while we all dipped into the pool of leggings and then dove straight in, I think it’s time to climb out and put our jeans back on.

You can wear them on a date, (with heels and a pretty top) out with your girlfriends (with a top and high boots), and to brunch with your family (sandals and a blouse)

The reason that a good pair of jeans is a must splurge is because the higher priced jeans will hold their shape and color better than their low priced cohorts.

You will wear them all the time and feel great.

Black Loafers

I resisted this one for so long. When I thought of loafers all I would think of was old men, in smokey back rooms drinking dark liquor. I was not into that scene so I thought that loafers were the worst. I have since learned from my mistakes.

A black loafer is a great shoe to have because you can just throw them on and run out the door. They look great with all kinds of outfits.

They are perfect for running errands (with overalls and a white t) at work (with pants and a blazer) or at lunch with the girls (with shorts and an off-the-shoulder top)

Any pair of shoes you plan on wearing often should have a higher price tag. The sole will stand up better, the leather won’t stretch, and any scuffs will be able to be fixed. They can take a little more upkeep but the look makes them totally worth it.

They will become a fixture next to your door in no time and will come and go from that one spot for years.

Cable Knit Sweater

Now this one is my personal favorite. I’m born and raised in New England so I’m one of those people. And being one of those people I love sweaters, I spend half my year in them so I absolutely believe it is a staple item and I think you should too. Not everyone lives in a cold climate but most climates get somewhat cold, even if it’s just at night and being in a big cozy sweater when it’s cold is awesome. And a good sweater can be so beautiful.

They look great in the snow, (with jeans and boots) in the city, (with black pants and boots) and even at the beach (over a skirt and a tank)

A higher end sweater cable knit will have more weight to it, hold up better, and stand the test of time. They are too heavy to by hung in your closet (it’s not good for the knit to be hanging) but they look so cute folded and stacked.

You won’t want to wear sweatshirts anymore once you get a good one of these.

Little Black Dress

This one may be the most obvious but I’ll say it again for the people in the back. The little black dress is the most important dress you will own. It will always be chic, flattering, and fun. This piece is also a bit of an exception because little black dresses come in so many different styles, fits, and fabrics. You can have multiple little black dresses and no two will look alike.

You can wear them to dinner parties (with simple heels and a clutch) to a wedding (with fun heels and some sparkles) or to a cookout (with espadrilles and a hat)

For something that you will be wearing to all kinds of events you will want it to stand up to sitting, dancing, and late nights, the more expensive dresses will be made better and hold up to more dancefloors.

A little black dress can make you feel like a fashion icon and who doesn’t want to feel like an icon for a night.

Black Heels

Surprise another black shoe is a must have in every wardrobe. But come on who doesn’t love a good black heel! Black shoes are so easy to throw on and look great. They can even sometimes be hard to find because there are so many on the market at any given time and how do you choose just one. But whichever one you choose will be great because you can find one that is timeless but still matches your personality and style.

They look great with any jeans (even the trendy ones like these and these) with dresses (like this or this) and with any style of pants (like these, these, or even these)

Once again a higher end shoe will last you longer especially if you are going out with your girlfriends and running around the city. The heel will be stronger and less likely to break.

Now strut like the cheetah girls in the Barcelona streets. Put on those classic black heels the look fabulous forever.

Wrist Watch

We live in a world where people so often say that this piece is outdated and unnecessary. I do not feel the same way. I think there are many situations that we are all in where it would be rude to pull out your phone while you are talking to someone just to check the time. A watch is a beautiful accessory that is so classic and lovely.

They look lovely poking out from underneath sweaters (like this or this one) stacked with bracelets (like these or these) or next to a rolled sleeve from a great top (like this or this one).

Just like anything else 99 times out of 100 paying more will get you a piece will last longer and work better. It will keep time accurately and look beautiful.

Keep your look classic and timeless with a timepiece on your wrist.

The great part of all of these pieces is that in 30 years when you look back you will not think “My god, what were we thinking??!” You will look beautiful forever.

These pieces are a must have for everyone because they are a great way to keep outfits looking timeless while wearing new trends. They create a strong base to any outfit.

It’s also great to know that you always have some pieces in your wardrobe that you can throw on and look good in. You will find yourself reaching for each of these pieces all of the time but they won’t get worn out on 3 wears.

  1. Definitely on board with the LBD and wristwatch! I personally go for black boots with a chunky heel over the pumps though, makes me feel badass πŸ˜‰
Since I’m always on the move and traveling, I try to keep my wardrobe sparse and with only the basics that are easy to combine into different outfits.

  2. Totally on board with the LBD and wristwatch! I personally prefer black boots with a chunky heel over the pumps, but it looks like we have a similar aesthetic.
